ASACOL (Mesalazine) -also known as Mesalamine or 5-Amino Salicylic Acid (5-ASA)- is an anti-inflammatory drug used to Induce and Maintain remission of Ulcerative Colitis (UC), which is one of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD).
ASACOL is a pH-dependent Mesalazine, the tablets of ASACOL crack at PH=7 (pH of terminal ilium) where they start to release their active ingredient (5-ASA) to acts topically at the site of inflammation with minimal systemic absorption to the blood circulation, thus it has almost no side effects.
Dose:
- Induction of Remission: 4.8 g/day (up to 6 tablets each day divided throughout the day).
- Maintenance of Remission: 2.4 g/day (up to 3 tablets each day once daily or divided throughout the day).
